Social Media Tips

Be Aware of Privacy Settings
  • Take the time to check the privacy settings on all social media accounts.
  • Facebook -> Account -> Privacy Settings -> Customize settings
  • From here, you can set individual aspects of a Facebook profile to “friends only,” “only me,” or you could choose to show information to or hide information from specific people in your network.

Monitor Students’ Time on Social Media Websites
Educators:

  • Be aware of your students' interactions, both in person and during whatever free computer time your students may have.
  • Be on the lookout for signs of bullying online - visit the National Crime Prevention Council website for more information.

  • Don't be afraid to bring up social media concerns to parents.
Parents:
  • Make sure you have access to your child's profile.
  • Set up your own profile, and set it to “friends only,” or even set specific items to “only me,” to minimize public access to your or your child’s personal information.
  • Follow your child's Facebook and Twitter accounts.
  • Don't assume this will take too much time - just the knowledge that you're there should have an impact on their behavior online.
