Preliminary Ideas for Integrating Social Media into the Classroom
- using the casual Twitter and Facebook formats of writing as jumping off points for struggling or under-confident writers
- designing a class webpage or web space (Weebly provides this service, free of charge)
- sharing social bookmarks of websites particularly well-suited for completing classroom assignments
- promoting media literacy (particularly as it applies to making critical assessments of online content)
- teaching students the importance of protecting one’s privacy online
- considering with students the pros and cons of the widespread visibility of blogs and Facebook pages
- brainstorming reasons why piracy of copyrighted media online is wrong, but still popular
- teaching students how to develop their own applications or websites
- designing a “physical” Facebook page (oversized, as a sort of art project, focusing on self-esteem and self-presentation)
- helping students design a professional “landing portal” for themselves (as a more responsible form of a web presence)
- making a “news feed”-style update system for the classroom (and/or school, school district, state, etc.)
- encourage student volunteer opportunities (for example, teaching technology and the internet to younger children or older adults)
